Internet Access Rules

It is within the context of our mission that JCCC Billington Library offers access to the Internet to allow users to connect to electronic information that may enhance local library research.

Staff Assistance:

The Library's reference staff will assist patrons with Internet use, searching and downloading as time permits. There is no standardization of sites on the Internet and Library staff may not be familiar with all applications. Formal instruction or information on the Internet may be obtained through books available in the Library, formal library instruction sessions, or through other campus venues. Because of Library scheduling, internet-trained staff may not always be available.

Often Internet sites are inaccessible because the host site is busy with many users, or the site has changed addresses or shut down, or the site is limited for use by licensed users only. Staff will not be able to assist in these situations.

Internet Use:

  1. Internet access is provided to support research. To that end, highest priority will be given to Library-instruction and to users conducting research related to JCCC coursework. Users will be asked to vacate their workstations as required so that the library may provide for research and instruction.
  2. Courtesy and respect for other Library and Internet users, for equipment, the facility, the instructional environment, and for the campus computing network are required.
  3. Internet workstations are exclusively for use with the web browser, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Internet workstations may not be used for listening to audio CDs, for playing recreational games, for loading and running personal software applications.
  4. Time limits may be imposed on Internet users when others are waiting for access.
  5. Food or drink must not be in the vicinity of the workstations.
  6. Please be conservative using library printers to print only essential research materials. Disks are available for $1.00 at the Periodical's desk and may be used for downloading.
  7. Unacceptable use of Internet access will result in the loss of computer privileges. Unacceptable use includes:
    1. violation of any local, state, or federal regulation
    2. gaining access to or using resources for which the user does not have authorization
    3. disrupting the work and/or use of the network and computers by others
    4. promoting commercial ventures for personal profit
    5. harassing, denigrating, or showing hostility to another person or a computer
    6. copying software protected by copyright
    7. "loaning" an account to someone other than the person to which it is assigned, whether on-campus or off-campus. Accounts, usernames, and passwords are not to be shared with others.
  8. Internet users must adhere to all campus internet policies and policies contained in the student handbook. These policies are on file for viewing at the reference desk.
